Fall off the table and get swept under

-
Jeezo. Has it really been that long? And is it really worth trying this silly m'larky again? I suppose only time will tell. I mean, we're not getting any younger, are we? So, yes, true, my reputation is tarnished a little in this green and pleasant pixel world. Or it is tarnished a lot. Depends who you talk to, who you choose to believe. Just like Don Draper (what would he do?), you know - good at beginnings, terribly good at letting go and fucking it all up. I've been around these WWW parts a fair bit over the years and written too many words in too many places. The word is plural, and then some. So many words and thoughts and songs and pictures. All gone now, via a click of a BIG ORANGE button in moments of panic, crises of confidence. But this feels a bit like coming home. I will try harder, just like they kept telling me to on all my report cards, way back in the days of school. The nice people at blogger.com even let me keep my old place going. How is that for good fortune and service with a smile? I reclaimed my title. No, not that one. This one: 'And Before The First Kiss'. It's still a song by The Field Mice, by the way. Just like 'Let's Kiss And Make Up'. That's still a song as well. Even St Etienne covered it, but I'm guessing you all knew that anyway. But, listen, if you don't know these wee tunes then you really need to get out a bit more, and probably travel back in time as well. It marches on, in a relentless way. For now though, this is a 'track' (not a 'song') by a band who come to Stereo, Glasgow on Friday night. You need to make it there. I'm expecting great things from the Hipstaaaah crowd. Checklists will be flipped out, waiting to be ticked off. And the 'band' will play a song or two. Or is it 'group'. What's the preference these days anyway? And I am not talking to you here, Mark E. Smith.

  1. I think this is worth it... and that's it I am moving to Glasgow (where exactly is that anyway, I heard once it was warm and sunny).

    :P

  2. Goodness me. It was meant to be an awfy quiet, low-key, sneaking in the back door kind of return to this strange land. How come you (and t.!) found me?! Anyway... you heard wrong, Glasgow (located just North of the new Hairy McPotter theme park) is rarely warm. Or sunny. Just like a certain, ultra-hip, West Coast city! I'd be moving South pal. And avoiding the land where Belle and Sebastian met Norah Jones (weep!)

  4. As much a surprise to myself... I just happened to check in last night and realised that blogger still had me down as Chair of the Department of And Before The First Kiss. I read that as a sign (aided via a couple glasses of red wine, I admit) and hey presto. Back again. And this time I will try and keep in tune. And in time. Thanks pal!

  7. Oh yeah. And Acid Ted died in the blogocide earlier this year. But is resurrected on Wordpress.

    And there's a Coalition Government.

And salad cream is the new retro food

    Think that covers it.

    As you were

  8. And you, I have been thinking of you a lot recently.

I'm very, very glad that you're back.

  9. Thanks Drew, Ctel... will be on the case! Suspect the next posting will be a review (with photos!) of the Warpaint show on Friday. But, then again, might sneak in another wee snippet and some new music before then. See how things are. Now, am off to the local Aldi to stock up on some salad cream! (was aware of the new coalition government - as a public sector employee I am dreading the forthcoming news today...).

  10. Lis! That is very sweet of you, thanks. <3 Are you going to see Warpaint on Friday at Stereo perhaps? Or time for coffee & cake sometime soon? Am DYING to hear about the wedding, trust it went well?! So, I will send you a text - I think I still have your number in my phone. :)

  14. I know, I know... caught in traffic. Work was impossible. Etc.

And. No. Fun & Heartbreak is over. You might not have heard this Davy, but, sadly, Nico passed away...

  16. well hellloooooo! you probably won't believe this, but just the other day i heard a band and thought, i bet old colin would really like this. so you have not been far from the thoughts of many folks. :)

  17. Och, likewise Marcy. Thanks. I think of you everysingletime I play that Suns of Arqua album. 'HE DID NOT DIE. YET NOTHING OF LIFE REMAINED!' Ha. :) BUT. What band was it you heard? I need to know. Please tell me it wasn't the new album by Belle and Sebastian!

  18. no, no, not belle and sebastian! they're called yuck and one song is in my latest post and the other one, the one that practically screams colin to me is called "rubber." eight minutes of pure fuzz-gaze.

that's funny about that suns of arqua album. i think of you whenever i get up the courage to play "time" by marion, which lately has been rather a lot! :)

  19. Silly Blogger...I haven't been able to comment from FF since first seeing your post so tried from IE and looky that, I am here!

    Welcome back Colin :)

  20. Goodness me, 'fuzz-gaze'? That is an entirely new post-sub-genre to me Marcy - I will certainly investigate! Marion. Jeeps. I remember seeing them play in London once-upon-a-very-long-time-ago, at the Water Rats in St Pancras. A small place that they made feel like a U2-sized arena.

    Thanks t. : IE 1 - FF 0!

  21. Logged on to find a comment from you and followed the link over to find this. "This" makes me smile. Welcome back dear friend. :-)

  22. Ha! Thanks for finding 'this'. Again. I was very glad to be reminded how important 'Untitled' is. Thanks Rachel!

  23. Oh goodness.

Seeing your reappearance has just made my day. And I was having a very, very shitty day, to top off the worst two weeks, but not I am smiling! Colin!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ah Steph - sorry to hear things are a bit shitty, in a worst fortnight ever kinda way. But at least you have the gift of foresight - I really liked the fact you displayed some caution about the new B&S, a very wise move as it turned out. Sadly. Take care!

  25. I'm wise and sage, don't ya know?

Very, very, very happy you are back.

  26. Thanks! It still feels a bit odd, what with it being such a long time away from this place, but I'll 'deal'. And keep typing. My ears don't feel as old as the rest of me either, as I think John Peel once put it.

  27. Er, thanks. I think. Matthew?! I know, early days but I'm trying. Again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. mmuuahh! i'm desperately trying to not believe that you and i are living some sort of parallel lives. here's to new beginnings! you come back at the oddest times, thankfully. (and i was just preparing my review of warpaint's new LP too!) xoxo

  29. Thanks Tart! I am blaming Dr Who. And the weather. And Wayne Rooney. And the Government. Anything and anyone, in essence. Let us toast new beginnings, reappearances and, especially, the Warpaint album! x

  31. Ha! Thanks for that Kevin. It's good to be back, for good (erm, just like Take That it seems!)
